·      The Aaron Merrick House was built for the son of William Merrick (founder of Merrickville) by Samuel Langford, a stonemason who had reputedly assisted in building the Rideau Canal, a present day UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 ·      In the1920’s the Aaron Merrick Estate was purchased by Harry F. McLean, a wealthy engineer and industrialist who changed the face of Canada with the creation of the Dominion Construction Company, a company that built many of the railways and dams in Canada in the early to mid 1900’s. Harry McLean had a friendship with Prime Minister of Canada, William Lyon Mackenzie King who visited Harry McLean on occasion at the Aaron Merrick Estate, and commented on the structure in his diary saying;

“The Manor House is a fine specimen of the best of old stone built houses; wonderful masonry.”   Prime Minister William Lyon MacKenzie King, WLMK Diary 1947

 ·      Harry McLean reputedly rode his horse to the top of the three-storey staircase of the Aaron Merrick Estate.

“One never knows what he might do or say.”

Prime Minister William Lyon MacKenzie King, WLMK Diary 1947
